Home Schooling

The Cheney clan are heading down off the beaten track to take up the challenge of home schooling. Even as I write this and talk about home schooling I have a wave of various emotions and thoughts that run through my brain. “Am I crazy?” “I’m scared!” and  “I’m a little excited!” are some of the main thoughts. Even before Noah began school, I had occasionally thought about the grand notion of home schooling ones own children. I’ve always admired those who have home schooled and yet we took the path most followed by the mass and enrolled Noah in a conventional school system.

I must say one of my all time favorite poems is Robert Frost’s ‘The Road Not Taken’. The last bit reads, ‘Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less travelled by, And that has made all the difference.’ I believe for us in taking the less popular home schooling option, we will be making all the difference for our own children.

At the end of the day, each must make decsions that best represent their own convictions. Other’s note that I am a school teacher myself and that seems to help people accept our decision to home school. At this point in their young lives, I’d rather be investing my expertise, time and efforts into my own children. I also believe that I can give them the best individually tailored education. This excites the teacher in me.

Home schooling is not for the feint hearted and I’m thinking that it’s best going into it with eyes wide open. Can I survive being home with my children 27/7 and will they survive me? Well, we shall see! The good aspects of home schooling is not needing to do the morning rush and dash to get to school. In the Cheney home schooled house we shall have a leisurely start to our day with a sit down breakfast and devotions together. That absolutely sounds like the right start to the day. There are less hours required on learning since home schooled learning should be more effective and efficient. The other thing I am looking forward to is having more time for extra curricula activities without putting stress on quality family time. So, there you have it … some of the bits of our decision to home school. I shall be posting regularly on our home schooling journey, especially once we actually start, so keep ‘posted’!
