Poetry Workshop for Homeschoolers

Get excited for the Year 5 – 7 Term 1 Poetry Workshop!

Due to the fun and success of the homeschool writing workshops during 2022, I have on offer for students in Years 5 – 7 a poetry workshop. This poetry reading and writing unit will explore joy, nonsense, contradictions, the natural world, the abstract, war and peace, the impossible, relationships, viewpoints, wonder, baby aliens, wordplay, young and old and much more. I get so excited by poetry and the fun that can be had with it.

The Poetry workshop will run each Wednesday for 8 weeks during Term 1, 2023. The first workshop begins on February 15th with the last workshop on 5th April. The workshop start at 9:30am and conclude at 11:00am. There is a short 15min break in between sessions for a play in the yard.

Students need to bring a water bottle, hat if required and snacks if they like. All other writing equipment is provided.

Teaching Style

The ‘Talk for Writing’ approach to teaching poetry is lots of fun and made a tremendous difference with the students in my classroom. Students engage in fun short-burst writing activities, drama, poetry, the creation of text maps, boxing up the structure of the model text, shared writing, reading, guided writing and independent creations. The approach is multi-sensory with lots of interaction and appropriately paced activities throughout a session.

With this poetry workshop, your child will:

  • engage with other young writers in poetry reading, games, activities and writing
  • explore a variety of poems
  • build on their grammar, comprehension and vocabulary within the context of poetry
  • gain tools to enhance their writing
  • directly improve their reading skills
  • independently write poems alongside other young authors
  • receive their own authors ‘Poetry Magpie Journal’ to organise their writing and collect ‘word treasures’

Notes are provided on my website during the term and some minor home tasks are given along the way to make the most of the learning. Only one workshop is available at this stage with only 10 spots open for homeschooling families. Further workshops possible with interest.
